"Today we went over common miscellaneous writing errors. First, we worked through rules for determining which word to use in some problem pairs like lay/lie, affect/effect, and who/whom. In the past, the student said that he primarily just guessed which word to pick, but after a quick review of the rules, he was quick to choose the correct word. After problem pairs, we took a look at parallel structure, which he was unfamiliar with but easily picked up. We also discussed punctuating restrictive versus nonrestrictive clauses."
