Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a good session covering aspects of math, critical reading passages, sentence completion, and grammar. We reviewed difficult questions from the rate, counting problems, and probability problem sets, and we payed special attention to the relationship between area and probability in geometric figures. We also glanced at geometric principles including slope, special right triangles, and complementary angles. I hope that some questions will emerge from the relevant problem sets that the student completes this week. We reviewed two critical reading passages together. The student should be encouraged that on all of the critical reading problems she missed on the diagnostic, she had narrowed the answers down to two well-considered choices. Her scores are high already, and they will continue to improve as the student relates the questions back to the purpose and central idea of the passages. I have suggested some supplemental reading. The student did well with sentence completion. I suggest that she fill in her own words before looking at the choices. It will help her to eliminate red herrings among the answers. This week, I will brainstorm about questions to challenge the student moving forward. She has volunteered to do consecutive timed math, critical reading, and writing sections this weekend."
"We covered Practice Test One out of the ACT guide for science. The student at first missed questions, but after the first passage and some teaching and explanation, he started to get 80% of the questions correct! We went over strategies for the science and English sections, dividing the passages and questions for the science into 3 groups each. When missed questions were explained, he paid attention, concentrated, and understood why he missed them (always small errors only during this session). He is encouraged to practice more on his own, and bring questions to our next meeting."
"The student and I practiced critical reading, and math sections together. He struggled with the first critical reading section of the day and didn't finish on time. I think he might need to get some reading in before he starts the exam to make sure his mind is awake and warmed up. Otherwise, he did very well today and seems to be making good improvement on reading and math. I gave him test 4, sections 1 and 3 to complete for our next meeting."
