Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we solved several problems involving derivatives of products and derivatives of ratios. We defined what a derivative function is graphically, and went into detail of how to use known formulas so we can evaluate derivatives of products and ratios effectively. The student is quickly picking up the material and is making a swift progress."
"We prepared for her test over limits next week. She had a couple of sections she particularly wanted to work on - intermediate value theorem and the squeeze theorem. Also went over questions from other sections, focusing on the definitions of the limit and continuity. She seems to be pretty comfortable with the material and should be in great shape if she continues to study before the test."
"The student brought materials from class to work on in preparation for her first test on Monday. We broke down how to solve quadratic equations using the complete the square method and outlined the steps to follow. We were also working on how to solve linear inequalities. We agreed that we would wait until Thursday to resume sessions."
"Today we reviewed material for the student's test tomorrow. This entailed going over the practice problems that he had already completed in preparation. He needed to be reminded about the definition of absolute values, but after that he was able to correct all of the problems on that topic that he had gotten incorrect. He has improved a lot since we first went over the material last week. Aside from absolute values, he was having issues with material from the first chapter. Specifically, he was having a little trouble with exponents and scientific notation. We did a few problems together, and I told him a trick for working with scientific notation that seemed to help (when your ten has a negative exponent, you'll add one less zero than the exponent). For the most part he seems really confident, and I think he's doing very well. I definitely think that he's prepared for his test tomorrow, so hopefully he does well!"
"Today we spent the session covering the final prep for the student's test. He has a reasonably firm grasp of most all concepts at this point. Her weak point is remembering where to start with a given type of problem. Once he gets any kind of momentum he can solve it. To address this we created a small note card which he is allowed during the test that details how to start each type of problem covered so far. I'm very excited to hear back how the test went. He certainly seemed hopeful."
"We went over graphing inequalities on a number line and absolute values. He was struggling a bit with compound inequalities, but we worked through several problems and I showed him how to distinguish and "AND" compound inequality from an "OR" inequality, and what they mean. We also went over lines, rays, and segments for his geometry class."
