"Today's class: we learned how to address family members. It is hard for a foreigners to understand Chinese people's title (grandpa is commonly used for dad and mom's father, but in Chinese, it is different way to call them). We draw a family tree for the student to better memorize it. Today's HW: 1. make flashcards 2. do practice book 3. memorize family tree"
"During this session, the student completed his research paper for his science lab. He used his 6th grade research paper checklist to make sure that he had included all the necessary information in his paper. The student made several important changes such as including a conclusion, making incomplete sentences complete, and adding supporting details. He also practiced his presentation for the last five minutes of the session."
"Today we started with the student's spelling homework. She was already doing really well with her words and had done very well on the previous week's test. She is still waiting to get back her math and social studies tests from last week. I look forward to seeing them and going over any questions she has about them. After spelling, we focused the rest of the session on math. We kept working with percents and proportions, including some word problems. She does well when she takes her time and reads the question thoroughly. We will keep practicing this, and I will also bring some fraction-to-decimal conversion worksheets for her to our next session, as she mentioned wanting to practice that more."
"I tried to get a good understanding of the student's struggles with his class. I gave him some tips for managing the material and previewing the coursework so he could familiarize himself with the material. I also helped him plan for an upcoming project that he has and gave him guidance on how to proceed with it."
"During today's session, we worked on a released state assessment reading test. The student read two passages and answered the multiple-choice questions. I explained to him the importance of reading carefully and referring to the passage to find the answers. Additionally, I told him that he may not find most of the passages interesting, but he has to read them for understanding. I noticed that he has difficulty with vocabulary and need help with using context clues to gain understanding. The practice test was printed by his mom and left with him. We will work on how to use context clues/ vocabulary. He maintained a very good attitude throughout the session."
"This student is a joy to work with. Her mother is concerned about her grades, but when we reviewed her current progress reports, she is earning A's and B's! Apparently, she is doing much better currently, but her mother wants assurance that it can continue. We spent a lot of time trying to decipher where and how I can best help the student. She seems very well organized and clear about the expectations for her classes. According to the reports, she turns in her assignments complete and on time. It is evident that her test scores overall are much lower than her class grades, so we discussed at length what happens during these tests and why she thinks she does not perform well. We then reviewed one recent test and discovered that the questions she answered incorrectly concerned only minor irrelevant details! I did suggest some strategies and she and her mother will ask her teachers to release copies of her tests to us so that we can better assess why she consistently underperforms."
