Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we continued practicing descriptive writing. We focused on the use of similes and metaphors and read two sample texts written by students of similar age. She analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of both pieces and offered suggestions for how they could be improved. We then brainstormed how to describe some of the interesting things she saw on her vacation."
"He had an excellent session today. We worked on creating a multiplication table that he can use during assessments and assignments as a way to remember and help support multiplication skills, strategies, and problem solving. We also created an outline for a persuasive letter. He organized his thoughts, drew out a plan, and his homework is to make the first draft of his letter. We'll make a second draft talk about proofreading during his next session."
"The student and I spent a lot of time today discussing two essays he has due for English Language Arts and Social Studies. Our session was long and extremely productive. We finished discussing both essays, and made huge strides in understanding and practicing argumentative essays. The student is understanding new concepts very well, including using transition words, details, specifics, tying ideas together in one paragraph, the purpose of an introductory and conclusion paragraph, using evidence, and explaining and introducing quotes. I taught him some new words to use in his writing in order to be more explanatory. After I would correct some of his writing a few times I would ask him, "What do you think I'm going to tell you to fix about this next sentence?," and he soon was spot on and able to pick up corrections himself with a little coaxing. He did great, and his essays turned out great. He is very smart and has all the ability to write well."
"The student and I started the first chapter of her Magic Treehouse Book today. She was very focused and motivated compared to previous sessions. I have noticed improvement in her reading. She has gotten a lot better at sounding out words. I asked her to reread sentences using proper emphasis. She did very well. I also did a "connect the dots" with numbers like 6 and 8 so she would get a feel for how to make them more readable."
"The student did terrific work during our tutoring session, independently writing her review paragraph and opinions for science. We also spoke about key concepts related to the Cold War to prepare her for an upcoming project on that era."
"The student and I went over her homework as well as some "unfinished" work from earlier. She is reading well and able to focus on making sense of what she reads rather than just thinking about figuring out the words. It's a really nice shift for her. She is also learning to use the context to find the meaning of unfamiliar words. Her writing is improving, and she can use pictures and a word bank to write a short passage. We will work on turning those simple sentences into a story in the coming weeks."
