Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started with a couple of review problems in isotopic abundance, which were covered in the last session, to make sure the student had the concepts behind the material committed to memory. I left him with 3 more problems to do before our next session. After the isotope problems, we went over material for his next test, which would be over Periodic Law and its history. For the next session, we will be doing some more remedial work from the first unit, including unit conversions, densities, and heat capacity problems. We will also be starting with the new concepts that will be part of the next unit in his class."
"The student was working on problems of rotation and torque, which were reviewed for him from the previous semester. Once we re-established the definition of torque in terms of applied force, distance from the rotation point, and angle, the student seemed to pick things up very quickly."
"Today we worked on her online homework, which covered electric fields and Gauss' law. The student knew the equations relevant to Gauss' law. She has an exam on Monday and is anxious to do well. We covered the concept of Gaussian surfaces and how to use them to determine electric fields. We finished her homework set, so she is going to work on her practice test and attend a review session later today."
"We worked through chemistry homework problems based on earlier material related to stoichiometry with gases, equilibrium constants for pressure and concentration, and calculating equilibrium concentrations using the "ICE" method. We also worked a few problems involving new material related to mean free path, collision frequency, and nonideal behavior of gases (involving the van der Waals equation). The student had a solid understanding of this material by the end. Dedicating a few sessions to mostly working homework problems, rather than moving on to a new topic, will definitely help his depth of understanding of the material so that he is better able to work with it in his college course. He will take the practice chemistry midterm for this course, and we will discuss any problems that he finds challenging and fill in any gaps in his knowledge."
"The most challenging topic from this session was electron configurations. They are overwhelming at first, but once you understand them they aren't that bad. We walked through it step by step and I think the student is feeling more comfortable with it now. She is still doing very well, and she is always prepared for our sessions."
"Through taking multiple mock exams, the student understands the main topics covered on the AP Biology exams and the topics he needs to review. I applaud him for taking the time to acknowledge his weakness and working hard to improve. We spent time reading the biology textbook. We studied the endocrine system, osmosis, etc. He studied very hard during the session, and I expect him to reach his goal."
