"The student and I worked mostly on math, but we also covered some reading comprehension, where her vocabulary is definitely improving. One of the student's weaknesses is knowing where to start on problems. We practiced on this by the student working through problems on her own with me as a resource. I gave her a minute on each math problem to play with solving it herself. This proved that if she takes her time she is often able to get to the answer without prompting by me. I am going to assign her some algebra practice problems in order to give her additional practice in where to start on the math problems."
"We did a lot of review with the student today. Initially, we covered sequences and how to approach them and find the pattern the defines the sequence. The student seemed to have a very good understanding of sequences and would find the pattern quickly for each sequence. We then did some review with multiplying fractions and finding common terms in fraction multiplication. We then reviewed 20 questions from a PSAT exam. It was very helpful to go through the exam together - I showed her how to approach each specific problem and what to expect from certain types of problems. We covered the radius and diameter of a circle and how to visualize and use the coordinate plane to find the lengths between two points. We also did some work with number lines and how to re-write fractions in order to visualize them on the number line. We reviewed how to find the area of a rectangle and a square, and how to set up algebraic equations in word problems. These are especially difficult because the student has not yet taken Algebra 2. However, she understands the concepts quickly and is acquiring more and more practice with how to express an algebraic equation. We did a lot of work today with cross-multiplication - what it means and how to do it. We worked especially with cross-multiplication in conversion equations, setting up direct correlations to solve word problems. Although it took some time for the student to really understand what cross-multiplication involves, once she got it she really understood how to approach problems with cross-multiplication, which was very good. We also went over how to find the average of any amount of numbers, which is a very important mathematical concept to know."
"I proctored the student through a practice ACT math section today. She started off very strong and we will meet once more before her test this Saturday."
