Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I was able to review the student's latest draft of her most recent book report and saw that there was little error and much improvement. Then we moved forward to grammar worksheets. She and I read a selected poem and discussed reading comprehension questions that focused on vocabulary. We also went over an additional worksheet that covered clauses and predicates. I asked her about any new books for reading, and she had selected a young adult fantasy title. I asked her to complete a new book report for next Saturday. Finally, we visited a typing tutoring website, where she practiced typing the home row keys as I observed her. She showed little difficulty, and this is an area of focus that her mother feels will further enhance her writing skills."
"The student and I worked through a practice SCAT. Then we reviewed his homework essay, a descriptive essay. I especially enjoyed the conclusion paragraph for this essay, as he took this opportunity to expand his idea even further and creatively switched to present tense in his final sentence. In terms of handwriting, I would suggest continuing to work on writing the letter "u" with a curved shape. He also needs to continue paying close attention to tense and person agreement throughout. We then worked on a timed practice essay. This was in an explanatory essay format. He completed this essay with time to spare. His final paragraph even had six sentences, a great improvement over our previous sessions when he would write a final paragraph of one sentence at most. He is gaining great ease with writing timed essays. For next session, I assigned a practice worksheet which should help with prompt analysis. I also assigned another explanatory essay with several stylistic requirements. Excellent work I look forward to our next meeting."
"The student and I worked on his writing assignment for the week which was to write a "future" letter. In it, he had to write a letter to his future self. We talked about the elements that are important in a letter like this and the things he should include."
