Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Concepts: word and numerical problems with different denominators, expanding numbers with decimals, understanding multiplying by 10, multiplying and estimate decimal problems, converting mixed fractions into improper fractions and vice versa, and identifying the place value within a given number. I showed the student how to approach all the concepts listed above. I also asked her to complete the worksheet that we worked on together."
"The student had an exam he wanted to review for. We went over practice problems from a previous exam. We went over sequences and series and how to analyze the convergence. We used the direct comparison test, limit comparison test, test for divergence, and the p-series properties."
"Today the student worked on representing negatives numbers on a number line and comparing them. She also spent a little time on a GCF word problems using the strategy RACER. Towards the end of the session, she was given few problems on adding and subtracting fractions to work on. Also, we touched upon the concept of finding area and perimeter of irregular figures, and HW was assigned on this topic."
"We covered polynomial functions (evaluating if they are a function, as well as the degree, leading coefficient, and type of function) and synthetic substitution. The student struggled a bit with the definition of what is and is not a function, but she came through in the end with understanding it. She was attentive throughout the session and engaged with the problems."
"The student worked on his homework to go from fractions to decimals and vice versa. He understands the concepts very well, and there are times when he makes minor mistakes. However, his improvement on checking his work is amazing. There was a moment when I was going to tell him to check a step, but he looked at his answer, realized it didn't make sense, went through his work, found the mistake, and corrected it to get the right answer! He also attempted the test corrections before I came, so we went over that for review. Next session, I will bring a mix of questions covering all concepts he has learned to really solidify what he knows."
"We spent a significant amount of time going over some of the rules for exponents and applying those rules with example problems. In the process of doing this, we talked about evaluating binomials with the FOIL method and factoring numbers. We also discussed how there are times where it is better to simplify one (later) part of an expression before another (earlier), as the simplification can make the whole expression easier to deal with. As homework, I assigned two sheets of challenge problems to complete for next week."
