This session was primarily devoted to Algebra II review because of a test the student has tomorrow. I think that he has a good handle on the discontinuous graphs, and how to describe the data and the trends on those graphs so he should be in good shape.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Watertown, WI
This was a dual session with both students on college application essays. Personal statements were the focus. We brainstormed ideas for possible topics, and I gave them the lowdown on what admissions officers look for: authenticity, specificity, and humility. I reminded them that it was about their perspective on their life and experience as much as the experiences themselves. I also focused on brainstorming, playing devil's advocate, and reframing weaknesses to present as strengths.

Tutoring review by Heidi in Watertown, WI
I gave the student a number of materials and we got acquainted with her scores, goals, needs, and how best to proceed. We went over reading strategies and she did some practice exercises which we went over in detail. She is keeping a running list of vocabulary in addition to working on her first list of word roots and vocabulary. I will give her a quiz at our next session on Monday. She is also doing some practice passages for homework.

Tutoring review by Johnny in Watertown, WI
The student and I went over his test and did test corrections. The material went over graphs and inequalities, and his few mistakes were simple and fixable. We then reviewed his homework involving roots and fractional powers. The teaching process took awhile, but he was able to evaluate different roots by himself. However, he was still not able to do application problems involving equation manipulation. This is something to work on in the future.
