The student and I covered trig problems. These included: unit circle, angles, values, radians, degrees, and inverse functions. We then calculated values by hand using sum and difference formulas. We also discussed how to simplify algebra expressions. She needs to work on memorizing trig values and all of the formulas.

Today was our last session for the year, as the student has his Algebra final on Tuesday. He was provided with a final exam review packet and we went over each section. We covered finding the GCF, factoring by the GCF, factoring trinomials, factoring by grouping (which his class never did), distribution and FOIL, clearing radicals, simplifying radicals, solving quadratics, and the initial trig functions. Afterwards I chatted with him and his mom about tactics to use for the final--Slow Down and Focus. Duane knows all the material.

Tutoring review by Amelia in Watertown, MA
The student took her test on centripetal force and believes she did well on it. We are now moving onto the next chapter that focuses on impulse and momentum. We had covered this before the test so we started the session by writing out the relevant concepts and equations. We then went through 2 lengthy worksheets given to her by her teacher on this topic. Once she was able to see the patters associated with the topic and its calculations she did much better. We ended the session by discussing her final that is coming up in about a month. In order to prepare we will need to review each section we have done. I have assigned her homework from two of the sections so that we can begin our review.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Watertown, MA
We focused on using the first derivative to find critical points and determine where the function is increasing or decreasing. We then worked on using the second derivative to find inflection points and determine where the function is concave up or concave down. We also looked at relative and absolute extrema and how to determine if a critical point is a maximum or a minimum. We also reviewed using the quotient rule to take the derivative of a function as well as what the derivative of the natural logarithm function is. The student is doing well taking derivatives of various functions and using them to find critical points, and she is doing better using the first and second derivatives to determine intervals of increase/decrease and concavity.

Tutoring review by Lorna in Watertown, MA
The student's very last final of the year is for Sociology 101. Her grade has been between an A and B for the last month, but she still has yet to post some of the extra credit that she may possibly still get; if she does well on this exam, she could get an A. The exam covered 10 chapters of the textbook that had not been previously covered. We went through the PowerPoints and a majority of the chapters and created an extensive study guide.
