Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session we worked through questions from the practice exams in the study guide for math, reading and writing. The student was struggling a bit with the passage-based questions, which never happens. We talked about why she was struggling more today and she said it was probably because the reading material was not as interesting. So we talked about how to read uninteresting passages and stay engaged enough with these sorts of passages to answer the questions. Other than that, she did not struggle with reading. She excelled at the sentence completion part of the section. The only thing I would suggest is that she continues to brush up on her vocabulary to add more words. In math, she was not struggling too much. She only missed a couple questions because she made small mistakes in the problem. With more focus she'd get those questions correct. So we will practice more to make that the case. In writing, she improved in the improving-sentences section of the writing portion. I assigned her to look over Ch10 in the guidebook to brush up on the grammar concepts."
"The student worked on the English section of the ACT for the first part of our session and did well. I also had him write an essay from an ACT writing prompt. His writing skills are good and his essay was very well-written and organized. We also went through some of the trigonometry questions he had for his pre-calc class and finished by practicing some of the ACT math."
"The student and I had a session where we worked on all of the SAT sections. We've finished with the content review and our time now is spent working on practice sections. The student wrote and essay, did two math sections, a writing section and a reading section. He did very well on all of them. I assigned him practice sections for homework."
"The student is obviously a bright student. I am placated by his willingness to work hard and believe we can reach his target score."
"The student and I reviewed the critical reading section of the SAT, going over the difficulties of reading comprehension for both short and long passages, as well as the comparing and contrasting between short passages. We addressed the concepts of narrow and broad scope as a tool for eliminating erroneous answer choices. We also did some work on the writing section, going over difficulties with grammar mechanics and usage."
"The students both reviewed 40-60 vocabulary words to start their lesson. Student 1 also did mathematics achievement, where we worked on strategies as well as calculations. She continues to show improvement in this area. Student 2 did verbal reasoning and reading comprehension, showing minor improvement."
"Continued to work on reading comprehension. The student seems to have an easier time with shorter passages, especially when he reads through the questions first. He did very well on the math review of fractions, decimals, and percents, which I think was a great boost to his confidence."
"In this session, I worked with the student's sister on preparing for the gifted program ACT exam. We focused on math, her primary area of interest/strength, and I explained basic exponent operations and slope-intercept form."
"Today, the student and I continued to review all the biology concepts in the SAT subject test prep book. We started the session with him asking me questions about the past test he took. We then picked up where we left off on the review. We covered viruses, DNA recombination, restriction enzymes, the nervous system, and the endocrine system. We spent a lot of time on the nervous system, going through it on a cellular level and also a macro level. He seems to be really improving across the subject matter and should be in a great place for his upcoming exam. We will keep working through all the review material before he sits for the test."
"We began our first session with a brief discussion of the student's previous scores and her goals for the upcoming SAT. Then, we worked by going over real SAT math questions. We reviewed ratios and percentages, plane and coordinate geometry, the rules of triangles, relationships between integers, and exponential terms. We discussed different strategies for how to move forward when a question proves intimidating, including step-by-step discovery, plugging in numbers, and diagramming. I assigned her math homework for our next session."
"We covered the SAT Math section. The student does well with simple algebraic problems (linear equations) and fractions and is familiar with statistical terms and basic geometry (triangles). We'll have to review circles, functions, quadratic equations, and factoring of the difference of two squares. I'm giving another math section for homework."
"This was the student's last session before he takes the January SAT. We reviewed a bit from each section. His reading comprehension has improved markedly. In math, we went over what to make sure he's memorized before test day."
