Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed her chapter four draft, strengthened her initial sentence, cleaned up some of the details of the essay, and in particular rewrote and rephrased the third supporting paragraph. We concluded by reviewing the first three chapters of the book and identified literary devices."
"My first impression of this student was that he is extremely bright, and has enormous potential. I went over some foundational tips that good students should know - choosing the right friends, eating and sleeping right, and taking homework seriously. We went over the assignment and we came up with a game plan. I showed him that we would set up a reading plan, and showed him how we were going to attack the paper. He seemed pretty happy and relieved that it didn't seem so tough after all. The immediate first step is for him to get the book, and then we can take it from there. I would like to see him next time with pencil and paper in hand as well. I will work with him on his comprehension, and will work with him on how to craft the paper. I'm looking forward to future sessions!"
"We did more vocabulary work on 6th grade words. We worked on reading comprehension exercises and worksheets. We then worked on her writing assignment for next week, outlined and started the introduction. We then had reading from The Hunger Games for the last 15 minutes or so."
"The student and I reviewed his 10 minute paragraphs, which were much improved on the punctuation front. He and I discussed the historical context for Anne Frank and then he read aloud. I assigned him 15 minute paragraphs (2 paragraphs in 15 minutes) and the remainder of Anne Frank. I am also having him write 2 paragraphs for the library's essay contest."
"Today we read out of a book entitled "Reading Vocabulary for the Gifted Student," from Flash Kids. We discussed synonyms and their meanings. We also checked in the dictionary about meanings of words. The student read a good sized essay in the book. It was followed by questions about the book. He answered the questions correctly on every question. He enjoyed the session very much."
"The student and I spent part of the session using ACT reading passages to work on various reading skills, including author's purpose, using textual evidence, and defining words based on context. He is showing improvement with how he thinks through passages and understands more difficult texts. After the ACT passages, we read several news articles and used them to continue our reading skill practice. He summarized articles, identified the main idea, and compared/ contrasted. He was focused and engaged for the entire session-great job!"
