"We went over an essay homework assignment that I gave to the student. This was an example essay prompt for the ACT writing portion, and the prompt was whether or not high school should be extended to 5 years. We looked over the essay that she wrote, and I commented on it. Overall, she has very good ideas and has a lot to say. However, she could improve the organization of her essay. We initially went over sentence structure and how to make sure to write in complete, fully-formed sentences. We also went over general formal structure for an essay, to make sure that she forms an introductory paragraph with a complete thesis sentence, two or more body paragraphs illustrating her thesis in detail, and a conclusion paragraph. I have given her another prompt, and we will be going over that on Saturday during our next session. We also went through a practice ACT math exam that she had done beforehand. Once we started going through the questions, she realized that she knew all the concepts that the questions were asking. The only issue that she has is that she tends not to write out her work and try to do everything in her head. Because of this, she makes small math mistakes, and sometimes doesn't understand a concept because she simply hasn't drawn it out visually. I urged her to write every problem that she does on a sheet of paper. Visualizing a problem can help you see things that you didn't realize were there. When we re-did the questions that she got wrong or that she didn't know how to approach, it turned out that most times when she wrote out the question on paper (or on the whiteboard), she immediately saw the answer and everything clicked. I will make sure to engrain this practice in her so that she can quickly draw out, visualize, and thus solve the problem."
"The student and I continued working on the math and science portions of the test. Her biggest challenge in math is trigonometry, and in science she needed help with questions that ask for an inference of a scientist's perspective. She continues to make improvements and I am confident she will be ready by the test date."
"Today's session went very well. The student and I went over essay strategies, as well as mathematics and reading. She is currently at an 85th percentile, and our goal is to reach a 90th percentile by the April test date. I assigned her a full practice test for homework. I look forward to our next session."
