"We wrote a descriptive essay about his favorite activity at school. He is really good with grammar concepts and applying them to his writing. He struggles with elaborating, and supplying details for his writing. We outlined our next essay about his favorite object, and will work on that next week."
"Tonight we started by looking at the paragraph that the student finished for homework. She did a fantastic job and her organization and details were wonderful. Then we spent a good portion of time doing some spelling work because that is one area where she struggles. She can fairly easily identify when a word is spelled correctly or incorrectly. I gave a tool called spelling monsters where she can write down words that she spells incorrectly and spell them correctly and use them in a sentence. It is a good way to make her aware of words that she struggles with. Really one thing that will help her spelling is simply slowing down her brain long enough to sound out the word, she often rushes through her writing. I gave her a list of 300 6th grade words that she can work on at home and become familiar with. Then we started talking about the 6 traits of writing which are the 6 traits that every writer should focus on to create a strong piece of writing. The 6 traits are ideas, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions. We defined each of the 6 and will work on them individually in the coming sessions."
"We went over essay writing. We talked about the parts of a paragraph and then how to make each paragraph flow with the next. The student was able to navigate rather well. We followed the stoplight method. I gave the student extra materials for homework."
