Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I decided to do the self-test questions at the end of the chapters. She knows materials quite well, but since the self-test questions tend to test students on details and more advanced concepts, she was struggling with a few tough questions. After doing a couple of chapters, she did gain more confidence and found it to be helpful."
"Our session today was focused on reviewing major concepts for the student's chemistry test on reaction rates and rate laws. We used some practice problems from the student's textbook, as well as problems from the online platform, to review. We began with determining the differential rate law from initial rate data, which she was able to do with ease. We then moved on to using the integrated rate laws with concentration/time data. I restated to the student that typically the easiest way to determine the reaction order from such data is to graph it, and figure out whether the linear, logarithmic, or inverse relationship is present (each corresponding to zero, 1st, and 2nd order reactions, respectively). The student also seemed very adept at understanding and knowing how to apply these different integrated rate laws. Lastly, we came to the subject of reaction mechanisms, which she wasn't as familiar with. We learned that the slow, or rate determining step of a reaction, is what determines the orders of each reactant. After explaining the concept of slow and fast elementary steps, and the existence of reaction intermediates, she picked up on it very quickly. After trying a few practice problems to affirm these ideas, we concluded the session. I feel the student is in good shape for her upcoming exam."
"The student and I used this session to review for her final examination. During this session, I gave her a practice examination. We went over the questions she answered incorrectly together. We also reviewed a few concepts that she was not completely comfortable with for the exam, and we talked about test taking strategies, so that she feels confident during her exam. Because this is the final for her AP Chemistry class, we will spend our upcoming sessions in review for the AP exam in May."
