Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We completed sentences for the weekly vocabulary list. We reviewed all definitions and went over common contexts in which the words are used. I showed the student how words are related/have the same roots and how this and common prefixes/suffixes can be used to derive definitions. The hardest part for the student seems to be identifying sentence fragments and subject/verb agreement. I believe that this is due to rushing through the work rather than a lack of understanding."
"We began our session with a review of the reading comprehension work I left for the student. She partially used the QAR strategy and we ended up reviewing the strategy along with POE to correct her errors. She shared that her teacher would not allow her to bring her prefix list home from school and so I provided her one for our session. Our focus today is on constructed response and using the RACE strategy to not only answer question but explain and provide evidence to support ideas"
"The student had completed his assignment from the last session and did a fine job. His organization was excellent and he used some strong details to support his claims. Despite a couple of punctuation and capitalization hiccups, his mastery of these grammar concepts is improving. We discussed using more evidence for each point and ways to create an even more effective conclusion. The student did an excellent job on an assignment where he had to take a body of text devoid of capitalization and punctuation and correct it accordingly and organize it into paragraphs. He began a second assignment where he had to reorder sentences about the game of chess to make create a logical paragraph. He has two other assignments to complete for the next session as well. His attitude is terrific and his writing skills are coming along nicely."
