Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had a great session yesterday. We started by finishing the math problem we ended with last time and talking about what he had done on his own since our last meeting. I then had him complete a warm-up worksheet which had a few problems from each national assessment section. We will do this at the beginning of each session from now on; this will be a chance for the student to show both himself and me what he is capable of and how he is improving from session to session. He did best with the writing section, which he said made sense because he is confident in that section and he had worked on writing during the week. He got stumped on a couple of the math questions, but once I pointed him in the right direction he finished them and acknowledged that they weren't that difficult. He reiterated that critical reading is the section he needs the most work in. In that light, we learned some good vocab words yesterday and he made it a goal to learn several more for next week. For sentence-completion problems, we talked again about taking context clues from the rest of the sentence. We spent the rest of the session in passage-based reading comprehension problems. We talked about the importance of reading slowly and carefully and underlining words/phrases in the longer passages which are central to understanding the meaning of a sentence, paragraph, or the passage as a whole. He demonstrated a good instinct of what is important to underline and take note of, which is good; we just have to practice translating that to answering questions. He made it a goal of his to work on vocabulary, and complete a math section for next week."
"The student has not taken any previous SATs. We covered an overview of the test, including the layout of sections and question order within each section. We focused on SAT reading, analyzing passages, and figuring out the author's purpose. She made good progress with applying new strategies."
"We went over practice test 2, and I assigned practice exam 3 before next session. I do recommend looking in depth at the website and their practice questions online."
