Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student took the SAT for the first time this past weekend. She said that there were some hard grammar and reading questions, but that the math was especially difficult. She would like to focus on math as we move forward in the preparation. I recommended that we go concept by concept through the exam using her test prep book. Today we were able to review both the Fundamentals chapter and the Algebra chapter. She found the fundamentals chapter to be very easy. She is strong in solving equations and systems of equations, reducing square roots, and working with primes, factors, and multiples. The algebra chapter presented her with some more difficult concepts. We focused on function notation, factoring complex polynomials, and solving absolute values. We also discussed when to plug in numbers and when to solve. Before our next session, she will finish one math section and categorize the type of errors that she made on the questions she missed (e.g. minor error, reading error, forgot the formula...). We will continue to go through the test prep math materials next week."
"During this session, I discussed the student's aspirations to go to a performing arts high school and his studies as an actor. We also discussed test prep strategies, his experience at school, what he perceives to be his academic strengths and challenges, and how to select a high school. I gave him an informal reading and comprehension diagnostic, a reading on a 7th grade level about the Native American chief, Red Cloud. He had a few miscues over the course of the long passage and some miscomprehension, but basically he is reading on an 8th grade level. His father and I also discussed several assessments with which he would provide me -- a recent evaluation, grade reports from school, and results from a test earlier in the year. We made a date to meet at the same time next week for a longer session."
"Today the student and I worked mostly on an ACT English section then focused on a trig problem set I created. When he slowed down and carefully read the questions, he did very well with the English section. His intuition is great. For math, we worked on deciphering what is required to solve a problem."
