Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had a pretty good session overall. We covered all topics with emphasis on the Essay and Reading. English: He did well with his extra practice work. We then worked through one passage together and reviewed some punctuation rules. Math: He worked through 10 med-difficult questions and had little difficulty. We did spend some time reviewing graphical shifts/stretches/rotations. Reading: He did well with the Humanities passage he had for extra practice. He completed a prose and social science passage during our session. He did well with the prose. Science: For this session we worked with primarily chemistry based passages. He did well with the chemical equations. He sometimes over thinks the science passages, and we talked about slowing down and using the specific given information. Essay: We discussed how to use the supports for each side of the issue that are directly stated in the prompt to build the bare structure of a difficult essay topic. Also, we talked about how to use different perspectives (student, teacher, parent, etc.) to think of unique supports. We then talked through 2 more essay topics, and he seemed to be able to apply these strategies with more confidence. He has for extra practice 15 Math problems, 2 Science passages, 2 English passages, and 1 Reading passage."
"Today's session with both students was very productive and allowed for specific section-wide feedback in multiple subjects. We started with English, where we went over the full English test that both of them did. I counseled both to make sure to take timed tests in a distraction-free environment, without phones, TV, or other people around talking. For the first student we also went over his Reading test. His understanding of the passages appeared to be good. For the second student, Science is a difficult subject. I gave him the strategy of focusing on 5 of the 7 passages (giving himself 7 minutes per passage) to see if the increased time would help with comprehension. For homework I again assigned a full English passage to both, and Reading and Science passages to Student 1 and Student 2 respectively. We will switch these for the last few sessions, but I feel like this is what they need to work on at the moment."
"The student and I spent today's session going over the math section for the ACT. We looked at two practice tests and went over problems together, most of which he felt comfortable doing himself. There are certain areas that he feels are his weakest so we spent some time walking through those problems and relearning concepts. He is very quick with numbers and is doing quite well. I am having him do a couple practice tests over the weekend so that on Monday when we meet, we can better address problem areas. I am going to compile the equations I feel will be helpful, especially for trig functions since he is unfamiliar with those and struggles there the most, and let him review these next week before his test. For our next session we will be working on going over math issues for the first half and looking at the English sections for the second half."
