Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued with the chemistry review. We are still focusing on the material of past exams so he can feel more comfortable with the information. This material will also be on the cumulative final. This review/homework packet focused on moles, electrolytes, ionic equations/net ionic equations, determining oxidation, and balancing equations. After some practice, it really looked like he was starting to get it and be able to answer the questions on his own. Hopefully with more practice, he will continue to strengthen his understanding."
"I used this as a diagnostic session to get to know what the student needed help in. We went over proofs and her various questions. As we talked, I determined that some areas for us to work on were: theorems used for proofs and solving systems of equations. We worked on talking about how to know which theorem to use, and she showed progress as we did more examples. Since she has an exam next Tuesday, we went over some study skills and talked about her doing practice problems before I see her on Monday night so that we can go over any questions she has."
"We went over a new practice test English section that the student had completed over the week. He improved his score to a 26 from the 18 that he received on the practice test from last week. He is getting more efficient as well as more accurate, finishing with time to spare (although there were a couple of problems that he skipped that he forgot to go back and answer). We also went over a writing section essay that he had written. We focused on what the graders would be looking for, including a stronger thesis, more supporting details, and smoother organization."
"During my session with the student we practiced solving problems that required knowledge of looping and arrays. We also covered the basic string functions compare To, charAt and substring. After making a few sample programs that used arrays, looping and strings, he completed a few of his homework assignments that also required knowledge of these subjects."
"Today the student and I worked on the reading section of the ACT Practice Book first. We focused on reading strategies and practiced identifying cause and effect relationships, comparisons and sequence of events. The reading categories were social science and natural science. Both were research based. We took time to identify important content related concepts and vocabulary that were embedded in the reading. Next, she took an ACT reading practice test in which she read a selection and worked through the multiple choice answers. I had her explain her reasons for the choices she made. She referred back to the reading selection to find evidence to support her claims. For our next session, we will focus on grammar practice for the ACT."
"The student and I continued our journey with games and were able to finish up grouping games! We also spent some time with Logical Reasoning questions and how to approach them. He will continue to work on his timing on full length tests."
