Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I had the student do two Critical Reading sections from a practice test in her SAT prep study guide and she scored in the "good" range for high school juniors taking the PSAT. I asked her to do Passage-Based and Algebra flashcards for next time."
"We went over two new sets of vocab and sentence practices, then did some test conditions for sentence completion questions and comparing two passages for reading. I think he has made huge improvements to his vocab and logical inference skills, and he should do great on the test!"
"We had an excellent session today. We have determined that we will be focusing mainly on math problems. The students will be going over many practice problems between sessions, and during sessions we will address the problems he found the most challenging before moving on to new math problems."
"Today we drilled for the math section, working through one section together and another individually to complete a score estimate. The student is performing around the ~540-550 range on the math section. No concerns to report."
"The student and I began our session, as usual, by getting a long reading passage out of the way. I then had her work through half a math section and a writing section. Next week, we plan to begin practicing for the ACT."
"We went over the student's practice test (she has completed 8/10 sections under a timer) and discussed her errors. We also reviewed her latest set of ACT scores -- she had improved in math but dropped about the same in Reading, resulting in the exact same score (although since she indicated that the test was a lot harder this time, that probably actually represents an improvement, particularly in math.) I also edited her college application essay for her and reviewed the suggested changes."
"Today we continued reviewing the practice test. We cover topics ranging from radioactive decay (alpha decay, beta decay, and gamma rays), waves and optics, and some mechanics. The student will be doing another practice test before our next session."
"Today, we covered his reading/writing/math homework, focusing mainly on writing, where we covered several grammar rules and discussed patterns of error. Then, we worked on a few hard math problems before reviewing CR reading strategies. Finally, we talked about roots/prefixes/suffixes as tools for narrowing down vocab possibilities when the words are unknown."
"Today the student and I focused on SAT Math. We began by working problems dealing with functions, as she missed a few of these on her last practice test. We then worked through three math sections from one test, keeping in mind the number of raw points the student needs to hit her target scaled score of 700. She scored a 720 on this test, which is her highest math score to date. With further timed practice beyond our sessions the student will be able to reach her target scores."
"The student is very sweet, and has big dreams for college. Her parents are very concerned about getting her SAT up to match her grades. She told me that math was the only subject she really struggled with, but her PSAT scores were in the 50s across the board. I'll know more about her situation next week. We focused on math strategies this week. I assigned her 50 math problems for next week."
"For our last session, the student and I sampled problems from across all three sections of the assessment. We used the sample questions."
"We worked through vocabulary and critical reading. The student does very well when she puts her mind to it. As always, she is quick to understand the problems. She is doing very well so far."
