Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"He had the preliminary college prep tests this week, so I tried to generally get him prepared for that by going over the differences between the college prep test and preliminary college prep test. He performed excellently in all areas, and I am very confident he will have improved upon his previous preliminary score!"
"This session was the scheduled date of the student's practice exam. I think it is very helpful that we get the chance to do this, because the resulting score will give us a great deal of information about his progress to date (as well as letting us know what the most productive focus of our time would be for the rest of our work together). We began the exam a few minutes past the beginning of our scheduled 4-hour session, and we were able to complete most of the exam! I assigned him some homework to be completed for our next session. The next time we meet, we will begin by completing the exam that we started during this session, and we will use the rest of the time to review the work I assigned him today."
"The student is taking the PSAT tomorrow, so we went through a pretty scattered group of subjects. We looked at Reading, Math, and Writing. We also went through her math homework from last week, and discussed the problems she missed. There were a few problems she couldn't figure out, so we spent some time on those. Next week we'll continue with Math and Reading"
"Last session before the student's SAT. Reviewed strategies for each part of the test, including outlining essay responses, m-c writing, reading, and review of hot math topics and formulas not provided in reference section. Ended with list of test-day reminders and tips."
"For this session, we reviewed the given homework concerning circles and solids, going over strategies to solve problems simply and efficiently. For the new topic, we went over probability, logic, and counting questions as they pertained to the SAT. This was actually the student's best topic and she performed really well! I assigned her homework to reinforce the probability portions. I also assigned her a practice SAT Math exam for Thursday"
"We started discussing the geometry part of the math section, and went into fair detail about special types of triangles. I gave the student a bit of extended practice on identifying the lengths of different sides in special right triangles. We also worked a bit on short sentence completion practice tests, and figuring out how to eliminate incorrect answer choices and narrow down to possible correct answers. Finally, we spent a bit of time on writing section multiple choice questions, doing exercises on adding important details or removing unnecessary details so that she would get into the mindset of identifying properly worded or awkward sounding sentences. She was struggling most with difficult vocabulary words, but was usually able to narrow sentence completion practice questions down to about two possible answer choices, which was a good sign. I left her with several practice test sections to do as well as an essay to write before Thursday."
"We began the session by covering all of the math concepts found on the PSAT. I then had the student do practice sections while I timed her. She completed them both well under the time limit. On the first she missed a few due to minor mistakes. I tried to get her to slow down, be more careful, and double check every single problem she does. She knows the core concepts very well she often just rushes through the problems too quickly. On the second practice section she took more time and ended up getting every problem correct."
"Today, the student wanted to start by going over the vocabulary I assigned last week. He knew all of the words--very impressive! He told me that he studies one group a day, and then reviews all of the words before our session. It's definitely working. We also went over the Critical Reading homework I assigned. He did pretty well with that as well--it helped that he saw some of the vocab words he had recently learned. We spent the rest of our time working on more Critical Reading, both sentence completions and passages. I then had him do some timed practice."
"Chatted with him about general goals for this exam, he is aiming for 2000+. Asked him to focus on sentence completion and passage reading in the official guide before meeting on Saturday. I am also going to send him back his practice essays with tracked changes and comments so he can see what needs to be improved there. Gave him vocab study tips too."
"We covered various SAT Algebra problems. I provided similar example problems to the ones that we just went over in the SAT blue book, so she could get more experience solving similar problems on the November test. I asked her to do half an hour of Algebra flashcards a day until we meet again."
"The student and I went over a lesson regarding the writing section of the SAT. I also made him give me a writing sample for the essay section, and left him with math and English homework to complete."
"We worked on vocabulary, grammar, ACT critical reading, ACT science reading, and we spent the majority of our time on the PSAT, mostly vocabulary and critical reading. We also went over am assigned essay for AP Government. The student does very well--she even did practice homework for this session. I expect her to do well on the PSAT, and it should be a good baseline for our subsequent work."
