Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered more material today on polynomials, domain, range, intervals of increase and decrease, and local maximums and minimums. She is still only on the second day of class and will receive her first grades this weekend. I have left her some notes she can use to study, and the practice problems she has through her coursework are quite extensive."
"Today's session with the student went well. We worked on preparing him for his retake of chapter seven which was simplifying equations, and factoring. I didn't see any new grades for this session. He still needs work on remembering what to do for specific problems. No extra practice as were are meeting tomorrow."
"The student has very strong math skills. I was impressed. We focused on the practice problems given by his instructor from sections in Chapter 2. This will continue to be the focus on our future sessions."
"The student and I did two make up assignments, which were a great review of concepts that we hadn't done together yet. We are hoping she can still get those assignments in for points as well. We also worked on her study guide, and which prompted us to review a few other lessons. Her final is tomorrow morning, and she's pretty well prepared. New grades had been added bringing her grade up to a 78.64. She is within shooting distance of a B."
"In our session, the student and I reviewed for her Algebra 2 final on Tuesday. We went through all of the concepts and problems on her practice final to ensure that she was ready to solve similar problems. We spent extra time covering the graphs of sines and cosines as well as the difference between combinations and permutations. I think she is well-prepared for her final!"
"The student is preparing for his final which covers aspects of multidimensional calculus. He seemed to do really well with it all. He struggled a little bit with switching bounds of integration, but did well after reviewing it a little."
"The student and I discussed her goals for our tutoring sessions, and looked at the textbook and old tests provided by her older brother. We agreed that chapters 1-4 were previously covered in her math class, so we would only briefly review these topics. She did the chapter 1 test from the textbook, getting all the problems right. We also worked through 5.1-5.5, which covered concepts she has seen in the past, but needed a refresher on certain concepts. She did many problems from the text, with reminders and tips along the way if she got stuck. I assigned about 30 problems for her to do before our next session, as well as the chapter 2 test. We agreed that we would only review problems she did not understand or that she got incorrect after checking her answers with the solutions key. Next session I will quiz her on chapter 5 using the old chapter 5 test her brother provided."
"At this session, the student and I reviewed the homework I had assigned him previously. He was having minor issues with the adding and subtraction negative and positive numbers. We then began working on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing rational numbers with taking notes and then working on problems. The student and I also started looking at number lines, statistics, probability, and square roots. I plan on assigning the student more homework at our next session that focuses on his needs base on today's session and the next session."
"Today, we worked on some sections from chapter one of an algebra textbook I am using with her. Together we went through sections 1.1-1.4. I worked through quick lessons from each section, had her complete practice questions, and assigned homework for each section. The student did very well in this session and is able to grasp concepts very quickly. I have no concerns thus far."
"We worked on some trigonometry during this session. The student was able to replicate the unit circle and she showed good understanding of sine and cosine functions. She struggled a bit in understanding how to label the axis of the graphs but she caught on later in the session."
"The student wants to pass out of algebra so that she can take geometry during the school year. We started off with some review of pre-algebra topics, including lines in slope-intercept form, exponents, and systems of linear equations. I also began introducing the concept of parabolas and higher-order polynomials. We will spend several sessions going into more detail here."
"On our final session the student and I continued working on the final exam review packet his teacher gave him. I was very pleased as the student only required minimal review of how to solve the problems and was able to solve the majority of them by himself! I am confident of his abilities to pull of a great result on his final."
