Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered Passage-Based Reading and Improving Paragraphs. I asked the student to do a Critical Reading, Writing, and Math section from his blue book and score it so he would get a sense of how many he gets wrong per section so he had some notion of how many he should skip on the actual test."
"The student and I had a very good session focused actually more on her college essay than on the SATs. We did some very interesting work on her essay, and she should be revising it and sending it to me when she's done. She also has a good deal of work to complete before we meet on Saturday."
"The student and I had another good session. We started by going through the reading passages from her homework. She is at the stage now where she is getting the new reading strategies down. We spent our remaining time going through an English section, continuing to spot-check for issues."
"The student and I spent most of this session reviewing geometry. She had a bit of difficulty remembering some of the more advanced concepts from geometry, but was able to apply those concepts correctly after we reviewed them. She should complete a practice test or even just a few sections of a practice test."
"We went over more practice questions and reviewed the concepts related to each question. For next session I hope to find a SAT subject test book with a CD ROM so that she and I can work on the computer at the same time (using screen share). She agrees that doing practice questions is most helpful to her"
"We covered preparation for the ACT using the web site. We talked over the essay part, and we covered the Practice Set One in the English section. We also did extensive vocabulary work from the most commonly tested words. He is to do as many of the remaining ACT practice sets as possible and review vocabulary."
"Worked through a practice test for SAT subject physics. I suggested he make some flash cards we can work with for our next meeting to help him memorize important formulas. He is certainly capable of doing well on the exam."
"Today we continued our Error ID work (addressing conjunction errors, redundancy, and reviewing noun-noun, noun-pronoun, and noun-verb agreement) utilizing some sentence analysis techniques gleaned from formal analytic syntax."
"In today's session, we focused once again primarily on difficult math problems. We worked on how to identify which problems are amenable to certain strategies (when to plug in), and practiced many problems in this vein. With continued practice, the student should have a near-instant identification of which strategy to use. I wrote down on a sheet any concepts / formulas that she should commit to memory (e.g. 3D distance, FOIL shortcuts)."
"The student and I went over a few sections of practice test 4. We worked mainly on spotting patterns and clues for these. She is ready for the test!"
"Today the student and I covered a good deal of math as well as reading comprehension. We focused specifically on the more challenging math problems as well as the double passages, integrating annotation and question-based strategies. We also went over some "day before the test" tips, as this was our last session before her test next weekend!"
"The student and I worked on the math section of the SAT. It's clear that she is in good possession of the fundamentals to tackle the test."
