Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over geometry; specifically, rectangles, parallel lines, angles, and congruent relationships in preparation for her homework and upcoming test (two weeks). She did well and was attentive."
"The student and I went over Le Chatelier's Principle in depth, specifically what happens when the temperature is changed. Then went over his homework. I have asked him to do his homework before our sessions or at least look over it, so we can have time to review for his final exam, too."
"The student and I had a productive final tutoring session today. We started by going over the practice science section that I had asked her to take over the weekend. She took a little bit of extra time with the section (about 5 minutes) just to see how she could do with the questions, and ended up getting a great score (37/40 questions for a scaled score of 31). Of course, on test day she won't have the extra time, but I find that most people work faster on test day than in practice, so she definitely has the potential to reach her goal score in this section. After going over this practice section, we spent the rest of the session talking about strategies for each part of the test. I wrote out a list for her, detailing the key strategy tips for each section. She seems ready to take the test, certainly ready to get it over with, and confident in her ability to reach her goal. Perfect!"
"Today we worked our way through the parts of the student's chapter review homework that predated our tutoring sessions. We will continue reinforcing simplification of algebraic equations in which order of operations is more complex and there are multiple layers of parentheses."
"The student has been doing a great job with most of his vocabulary and following the patterns of verbs. However, I find that even though he knows how to conjugate a verb, he may not know what it means, so we are working on that as well as the imperative tense (commands). I made worksheets for him to complete using these topics. There are some verbs he still has trouble with, such as "deber" and "decir," and we are working on those."
"During the last session with the student, we went over some basics of Organic Chem 1 concepts that he had questions about. As we went over the topics, we clarified the questions that she had about substitution and elimination reactions, and she also realized that she could handle material as long as she curtails the apprehension she has about it. We also started working on Chapter 18 - ketones and aldehydes. The student will be going through the book and notes and will be practicing the questions."
"Continued the routine. The student is very comfortable with the entire test prep book, especially the math sections. I believe this is intended for lower level test prep, whereas her other book is for upper level. She is making strides with respect to the vocabulary we're hoping will appear on the upcoming SSAT."
"Today we reviewed the student's Biology discussion assignment. We talked about planning out your response on paper before typing it into the on-line forum. We then reviewed the steps on DNA Replication. He asked very good and thought provoking questions."
"During this lesson the student and I worked on converting fractions to decimals and percents. We began with fractions over 100. She successfully mastered the concept of recognizing these numbers as hundredths, and was able to easily convert them to decimals and percents."
"The student and I finished up with the reading section from his first test today. He seems considerably more confident about the reading and science sections since we've discussed them, although we haven't done any new sections there yet for him to try his hand at. We are going to turn our focus next on the English and writing sections."
"We reviewed math problems that the student had issues with. She hasn't been able to take a full test, or even a full math section, and I hope she has a chance to before her actual test. She needs to continue to practice breaking down word problems and working with ratios. In terms of content knowledge, she's pretty solid."
"We talked about what the student found challenging when she took the SAT in November. Based on this, we mainly focused on writing multiple choice and reading sections. We discussed specific grammatical principles (to be expanded on in future sessions) as well as overall test-taking strategies."
