Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered methods to approach word problems, adding and subtracting negative numbers, adding and multiplying variables with exponents, the distributive property. If the student can become proficient with the foundation we talked about to the point where he can do problems in his head, he'll be ahead of where he needs to be."
"We reviewed test practice sessions as the student is retaking his Algebra exam on Friday. The student had some trouble remembering procedures learned in class for certain understandings. We reviewed techniques for using the graphing calculator. I reviewed each question with him making sure to review any pertinent vocabulary. We also discussed certain test-taking strategies such as eliminating answers as you work through a problem."
"We reviewed for his upcoming math final. Overall he was very strong in all respects--including "polishing" his answers (that is, including units, formatting appropriately, really answering the question). Most noticeably, he had basically finished a very lengthy review packet--I was very impressed. He had some minor issues with inequalities, which were eliminated when we when over them briefly. I left him with an extra review packet and am going to assign him more work for over the weekend."
"The student worked on multi-step problems and formulas for algebra. We found a poem and wrote a paragraph about why she liked that poem. Then we wrote a letter to colleges for her applications, and spent time working on her resume."
"Today the student and I covered solving equations, we worked on one step and two step equations. He struggled mostly on how to solve when there is a fraction in the equation at the beginning, but as we worked and did more practice problems he became much better at being able to solve them. I did leave him with 3 worksheets over the material we covered in our session to do this week for homework along with a key so that he can check his work. Great session, no concerns."
"This was the student's and my first session together. We had a short discussion about her summer plans (going to Europe). We did some practice problems in the areas that she feels least comfortable with, including exponents and factoring. She really picked up on the material quickly."
"Today the student and I worked on her summer algebra packet for her class next year. We covered diagrams, different counting methods, etc. during our session. We are planning on meeting next week in order to continue working on this assignment,"
"The student and I reviewed material that will be on his upcoming math quarterly exam. The material include plotting inequality and absolute value graphs. He was a little rusty on some of the concepts, but after some practice he seemed to really have a good handle on the material. We also covered simplifying radicals and radical operations. Again, with practice the student really understood the material. He is prepared to do very well on the upcoming exam."
"We spent the entire session today further examining and practicing properties of exponents and roots and basic logarithms. The student appeared to benefit from this extra attention."
"The student and I covered systems of equations, factoring, isolating a term, combining like-terms, and word problems. I did not see any scores or grades. She attempted questions from her homework assignment on her own to make sure she understands these concepts. No major concerns from this session. Overall, she was a pleasure to tutor."
"The student and I worked on her review packet which covered graphing, properties of exponents, factoring/solving quadratics, solving systems, adding/subtracting polynomials, and word problems. She went through each problem. I noted the ones she has the most trouble with (adding and subtracting polynomials and exponents) and explained to her how to do them. I gave her practice problems to try. She did very well with the practice problems after I explained to her the concepts."
"In this session with the student we worked on studying for his first exam. We went through his pretest and I gave him a test to see which material he still needed to review. I told him that he needs to make sure that he goes over his Algebra review PowerPoint that I provided him along with his pretest before he takes his exam."
