"After looking at the student's ACT Reading diagnostic test, I decided to focus on making inferences and determining the main point from passages, since that seemed to be a challenging area for him. We went through several practice questions that focused on these ideas, and took a break in the middle to practice some sentence completions and work on vocabulary. He had problems with some of the passage questions, particularly some especially challenging science passages. I emphasized that we were specifically looking at challenging areas for him, as without challenges, there's no room for improvement. We talked about some important skills and practices, especially finding textual support within a passage for the answer, and not using our own experiences or knowledge to infer an answer. He showed notable improvement from our last session in reading all of the answers and making a well-reasoned choice. I gave him a website with some root/prefix/suffix practice on it, and encouraged him to keep reading daily and to try out the SAT Questions of the Day. Next week we will probably look at some ACT reading passages."
"The student and I concentrated on percent change, functions, and special exponents today. He seems to be doing very well in math, and just needs to brush up on his formula. He also needs to work on strategy for vocab problems to compensate for any challenges there. He needs to have the math diagnostic done."
"I was impressed that the student completed the entire first practice test and scored it herself! She is a very consistent test-taker. I started the session by reviewing the basic SAT grammar rules. I think that helped her tremendously because she had never formally covered grammar in school and she was systematically getting certain questions wrong of a particular rule. I placed particular emphasis on parallelism, misplaced modifiers, logical comparisons, active voice, and idiomatic expressions. As for the math sections, she did extremely well on the easy/medium questions, but struggled towards the end with the hardest ones. I reviewed the fundamentals of geometry with her because that seemed to be a weak point. I asked her to make flashcards and to study SAT vocabulary words for homework."
