Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student's mother shared his previous STAAR scores with me and also shared an assessment with me that she had conducted on him. He is above average in every category except writing and sentence structure. He and I worked on a personal narrative this session. We spoke about the importance of writing about something meaningful to him when choosing a topic for a personal narrative. We did a web and brainstormed ideas for his personal narrative before writing the introduction. We will resume writing his personal narrative next session."
"Introductory session. Covered student's needs for future tutoring. Also discussed with parent and student the desired course of study. Completed freewriting exercise (5 minutes). Completed targeted writing exercise with a writing prompt (5 minutes). Will expand these two exercises in future sessions."
"Student 1: Student 1's father wanted me and him to get to know each other while also working on organizing writing and thoughts. I showed him how to outline a five paragraph essay, teaching him about topic sentences, concrete facts, and supporting details. He wrote a 5 paragraph essay about himself and his family. I also wrote an essay to show him an example and share things about myself and my family. I saw one of Student 1's math quizzes, and we will focus on improving his knowledge of place value concepts related to multiplication. We will begin our next session by addressing those math concepts. I asked Student 1 to edit and re-write his personal essay in final draft form for homework. Student 2: Student 2's father also wanted me and her to get to know each other while working on organizing our writing and thoughts. I showed her how to outline a five paragraph essay, teaching her about topic sentences, concrete facts, and supporting details. She wrote 3 paragraphs about herself, her family, and her pets. I also wrote an essay to show her an example and share things about myself and my family. I asked her to finish her essay for homework. Student 2 and I also worked on decimal place value, correctly saying mixed numbers (whole numbers and decimals), and adding and subtracting decimals. She seems to have a strong grasp of these concepts."
"The student and I continued working on his assignment in time for his next class on Thursday. I allowed him to answer his own questions about the assignment and search for his own quotes and pieces of evidence."
"I was very impressed with the student's ability to figure out unfamiliar words tonight -- I gave him some that were way above 4th grade level and he was still able to use the skills that we have been working on and figure them out. We moved on to talking about theme, and he was picking up on the idea quickly when we left off."
"The student recounted the recent chapters of Percy Jackson to me as I prompted her for details. We are working on metacognition and she is making good progress! She then read two chapters to me and I assisted her with some decoding issues that came up. We determined that she will finish Book 1 before our next meeting, so we decided that she would check out Book 2 from the library so that she can started reading that for our next session's discussions. Then we completed some vocabulary exercises for relevant words found in Percy Jackson manuscripts. This included matching definitions to selected words, completing multiple-choice questions, and finally analogies. She will study these words and their definitions for review when we meet again."
