Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is preparing for finals. Today we worked through a science study guide he teacher sent home. This went a little slow due to the nature of the study guide and required a bit of reading from the student. I encouraged him to take things one section at a time. He will need additional help reviewing acids and bases, covalent vs ionic bonds, and balancing compounds."
"During this session we focused on adding and multiplying negative and positive numbers. This is the area that the student is covering in school. I showed him pointers on what to look for when solving these problems. After working several problems together from the text book, I had him walk me through the steps for solving the remaining problems. I believe that this exercise will help to boost the client's confidence. He then informed me that he had a homework sheet that was due and he worked on those problems as well."
"We spent the whole session on math. First we worked on translating word problems to mathematical terms. Finally, I taught her a test strategy of only using the information she needs to solve a problem, rather than trying to use all the information/formulas she's learned."
"The student and I finished covering the material found on the math section of the prep exam, and then he took a practice test. He will take another practice test during our next session, and then we will go over areas for improvement before we move on to verbal. He is a very strong math student but must work on organizing his work better; he struggles when he doesn't work carefully."
"The student is just starting to learn stoichiometry in chemistry. We reviewed definition of molar mass and it's units. She had several homework problems that we worked through. She practiced balancing chemical equations and setting up the math as she worked through the practice problems. I double checked her work and answered questions. Other than transferring information incorrectly a couple of times, which is an easy mistake to make, the student did a really good job and she seemed to understand the process of setting up the calculations by the end of the session."
"This session the student continued working on a homework assignment for his Mandarin class. He had to write a short essay, so I guided him in how to translate what he wanted to say into Mandarin. He also had a Mandarin quiz the next day, so we prepared for it by going over vocabulary and grammar constructions."
