What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe students learn best by actually doing things. I try to make learning relatable, accessible, and interesting. I am flexible in my approach to teaching content based on each student's unique style, interests, and needs.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I like to begin with a conversation in which I try to discover what the student believes his or her strengths and weaknesses are, what he or she enjoys, and what his or her goals are for tutoring.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help students become independent learners by helping them learn to learn. I can give them tips and tricks to help remember things, and make reading and writing, and even a foreign language, more straightforward.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I keep students motivated by relating the content or subject matter to something that is of interest to them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try a variety of approaches, focusing on strategies appropriate for the student's learning style and academic needs.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students learn how to actively read, and give them help to look for clues that will help comprehend the text better. I also give students little tricks to remember words that are new to their vocabulary.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Taking the time to get to know a student helps to avoid wasting time trying strategies that the student wouldn't find helpful, and it gives them the confidence knowing that I personally care about their academic success as people.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I always try to relate material to things that interest the student. Additionally, I start by giving students easier passages or tasks to complete to boost their confidence and help them feel that they are actually making progress.
