What is your teaching philosophy?
Everyone is different, and I have to treat each student separately.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Try to break the ice with a joke, or try to learn a little of their background.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Making clear the goals that they need to achieve, but also giving them the tools necessary to complete them step by step.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By giving them variety of different activities during the hour of class.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try to explain in a different way, or try to show the concept in a more graphic or practical example.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I give them very simple sentences in order that they start getting confident with the comprehension, and slowly increase the difficulty of the reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I talk about myself for a little bit in order that they can ask questions to me and I could start testing their personalities, etc., and then I start asking things about them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I try to look for a subject that interests them or a hobby that he or she practices, etc.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I have them explain in their own words what have they understood, or I ask them to give an example of the subject that we are talking about.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I give them positive compliments when they answer questions correctly. I also encourage them to research more about a simple subject, and next class tell me something that he learned on his own.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I ask why are they trying to learn the subject that I am teaching. How are they going to use that learning in the future? I also ask them if there is a special requirement in order to get accepted into a school or job.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I work with them one on one. I identify their pace and level, and then I try to teach according to those findings.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Lectures, PowerPoint presentations, graphic materials, photos, games, etc.
