I am British, and currently pursuing my Masters in English at CSU, Long Beach. I majored in World Literature at UCLA, and minored in French. I have a teaching credential in English. My teaching experience involves teaching 8th grade Accelerated English to students instructing them on rhetoric, reading comprehension, composition, and grammar as well as preparing them for standardized tests. My tutoring experience includes individual and group tutoring of reading, writing skills, and documentation styles (APA, MLA) to college students at CSU, Long Beach. I conducted weekly workshops to assist students in the writing process including advising them on how to write effective personal statements, research reports, and how to improve their timed writing skills for exams. Many students sought my help in passing the Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE). I also have mentoring experience in reading and writing, having worked with elementary to 10th grade students, specifically English Language Learners. If you are a student who is struggling with grammar, composing thesis statements, essay style and structure, or you need to improve your reading comprehension and critical thinking skills then I can help. In addition to teaching English, I also tutor French. I minored in French at UCLA, have worked in a language immersion preschool in Los Angeles, and lived and worked in France. As a linguist, I have a passion for literature, language, reading, and writing, which I want to share with my students. I am eager to make a difference in students’ lives by showing them how to develop their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, and to appreciate literature. What is your teaching philosophy?

My goal as an English tutor is to improve the reading, writing and critical thinking skills of my students. By stimulating student discussion around literary and nonfiction texts, and having students undertake daily reading and writing tasks, I hope to deepen their understanding and appreciation of literature.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would give my student a diagnostic, such as a practice test in the form of a reading comprehension passage or a writing prompt, to determine their strengths and weaknesses in reading and/or writing to better help them improve in that specific area.
