What is your teaching philosophy?
Everybody has the opportunity to learn in their own way. Learning is the best way to grow intellectually. You have to motivate students for them to learn from you.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and have him/her do the same. The purpose is to relate their work, their life, and their interests. I need to make it fun.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will create an environment where the student can critically think and apply strategies to help them learn on their own in their zone of development.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would identify the exact problem where they need help. I would model to the student to give them ideas enough for them to understand better.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would use audio if they can't stay focused. I would do a lot of practice to teach them reading strategies. The content also has to be of importance to the student.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Communication is most important. Also, they must know you care about them. You have to assess where they are at in order for you to teach them appropriately.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
As I have said before, students have to be interested in the subject, and it must be relevant to their life. Activities that promote interesting things about a subject are very useful, too.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I first would asses to where they are at in the beginning. Then, I will let them practice and check for comprehension. Finally, I will test them to see if they have learned the objective.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I can reinforce their answers, and if they have questions, I can guide them in the right direction for them to answer their own questions using critical thinking strategies. I won't ever say they did something wrong/bad.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I can do it by testing: orally, in written tests, essays, etc.. There can be so many ways to see where they are at and what they need. I will set high expectations for them, too.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
It is all about the student, and all material will be working around the student's needs. There will always be challenging work for them to prosper and become better students.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I like using visuals like objects, pictures, and videos. There are many ways to aid learning using the 5 senses to my advantage.
