I am passionate about helping students learn because I love learning and I want to instill that love in others. I believe in lifelong learning and know that some people have to be taught to enjoy learning. I have received help in my past with certain subjects and I believe that a good teacher can open a student's eyes to something they never understood or liked. I have been working with students as a substitute teacher, full-time teacher and teacher's aide for the past 12 years. I have worked with regular, Special Education, and gifted education grades PK-12 during these years. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Houston-Downtown in 2011. I also attended the University of Texas at Arlington for 2 years. I feel most comfortable tutoring elementary level students, as that is the level I have spent the most time teaching. I can tutor reading, reading comprehension, writing, spelling, grammar, basic computer skills, editing, phonics, handwriting, science, art, public speaking, special education, as well as Middle School level reading and reading comprehension. My favorite subject to tutor is spelling. I have always been interested in spelling and have won a few spelling bees. I also competed in U.I.L. spelling for several years in elementary and middle school.
My teaching philosophy is based on getting students excited about learning. I feel that if I am excited about learning, it will rub off on the student and get them excited. If a student doesn't like learning, they are going to be miserable and not even try to learn anything. Sometimes, it is necessary to inform the student WHY they need to learn a subject. How will it help them in the future? When they see how important it will be to them in the real world, they seem to want to learn it a bit more. My tutoring style is somewhat relaxed. I feel that stressing a student by rushing them and putting too much pressure on them will cause them to shut down and give up. I have had that happen to me before, so I know how it feels. I will definitely still have a structure to the learning, but will be open to moving at the student's pace and using materials that they enjoy and feel comfortable with.
