Liana

My educational background is very diverse. Growing up, my sister and I were both homeschooled by my mom because our family travelled frequently between Boston and Miami due to my dad’s job. I was homeschooled up until 8th grade, when I began attending Ransom Everglades middle school. I continued my education at Ransom Everglades high school, and am going to begin my sophomore year at Northwestern University this fall. I am currently working towards my Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Cell Biology and Physiology. I am also a declared Business minor and am considering double-minoring in Global Health as well.

I tutor subjects in diverse areas, from the SAT Spanish subject test and Algebra 1 and 2 to AP Psych and AP Enviro. Having only just finished my freshman year, I starkly remember taking and being tutored for the ACT, so I also tutor ACT Reading, English, and Science. I enjoy tutoring all subjects, but have the most experience tutoring AP Enviro. I taught elective classes, one of which was Environmental Science, at Breakthrough Miami for two years. Working at Breakthrough opened my eyes to teaching and tutoring, and helping students understand material is a very rewarding experience for me.

Having been both homeschooled and a student at school, I have a unique philosophy on education. I believe that learning material at your own pace - i.e. skimming over the information you know well and spending more time on what you find difficult - is crucial. I also think that truly understanding the material on a deeper level is more important and beneficial than memorizing shortcuts to get to the answer. I am very patient and will work alongside the student toward reaching that “Aha!” moment when the material finally clicks and everything makes sense.

Outside of academia, I am on the club rowing team at Northwestern and have rowed for four years. I have played piano for 13 years and adore music. This summer, I have been interning with two different music production/entertainment companies, writing articles on up-and-coming DJs and artists, tuning vocals, and doing PR work. At Northwestern, I am also involved in gender equality groups and my sorority.
