I am a certified teacher with a Masters degree in Museum/Childhood Education from Bank Street College and a lifetime of experience working with children. Lately I have been substitute teaching in a variety of private and charter schools in New York City.

Growing up, I had a great deal of difficulty learning math, so I know how it feels to be afraid of a subject and believe you will never learn it. That fear and lack of confidence can affect everything you do, in and out of school.

As a teacher and tutor I use my own experiences and Bank Street training to help children overcome their fears and insecurities and open their minds to learning again. I work one-on-one with each child to figure out exactly where the problems began, then I create an individualized program to address both anxiety and subject comprehension. Together we move past emotional and cognitive barriers and develop tools for use in future learning/school experiences.
I look forward to helping your child reach their full potential as a student.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone can learn, but we don't all learn in the same way. As a teacher I have to create multiple methods/entry points to accommodate different kinds of learners. I also have to give my students time to play with new ideas. Children have to be encouraged to ask questions, investigate and build their own understanding of a subject. Learning is not a passive activity.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would sit and talk with the student. I would try to figure out what his or her strengths and weaknesses are, and what areas are a particular problem. I would ask them to show me their school work to try to gauge their level of understanding and, if possible, to figure out exactly how and where they are having trouble. I would also make it clear that I am not judging them and I know how it feels to have difficulty learning something. I would ask the student, "What do you want me to know about you?" and "What do you want to accomplish here with me?".
