Before I began working at my current position as a high school teacher at Colonia High School in Woodbridge, New Jersey, I worked as an SAT and ACT test prep tutor at the Huntington Learning Center in Hamilton, New Jersey. That experience showed me the ins and outs of these challenging tests and helped me to better understand the tricks and inner workings of the test. I never expected to become a test prep "expert", but it unexpectedly made me better as an educator as a whole.

Once I began working at Colonia High School, I got the opportunity to work with every grade level. I have taught freshman and sophomore English, juniors in SAT Prep, and seniors in AP Literature. Being able to interact with a wide range of students has allowed me to see different learning styles across an eclectic group of students.

With five years of experience in SAT and ACT prep, I have found that every student has the capacity to improve his or her scores. Through hands-on practice and specific repetition of select skills, all students can achieve the success they want on their SATs or ACTs.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that the best way to learn is through practical application. I can tell students how to do something, but they haven't truly learned until they are able to actually complete a task on their own. True knowledge comes from understanding, not from simply memorizing information.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session will involve a diagnostic practice to have a clear understanding of the student's strengths and weaknesses. It will also involve a conversation with the student to address any specific concerns or questions regarding the subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students become independent learners through independent practice. If a student gets a question wrong, I challenge them to try and understand their mistake and make a correction before I step in to explain the answer.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive reinforcement is always the most important part of motivation. It's easy to get frustrated, but it's important to remind students that everyone makes mistakes. The entire point of tutoring is to make mistakes now to avoid mistakes in school or during a test.
