Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy on teaching is that if you make it relative to the student, they will gain a better understanding of what it is they're learning. Celebrating even the smallest success sets them up for success!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I will provide them with a mini-assessment on the subject area needed to gauge what specific areas we need to focus on. We would also analyze their responses to the questions/problems.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students learn best when they can find alternative solutions on their own. Having them be able to create, apply, and analyze questions will give them a better understanding on why certain strategies can or should be utilized in certain scenarios.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Students love a challenge; even if that means challenging me! I will always speak positive of a child's efforts and we would brainstorm together alternative ways to get to our solution. Learning is like a road map...everyone's trying to get to the same destination, but there are many routes to take!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would go back a level to see how well they grasped that concept, analyze any patterns, then gradually add on with additional, more challenging concepts.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I find that most students struggle with vocabulary when it comes to reading comprehension. First we would break down what those unknown words mean and find synonyms to understand that first. Then we would chunk paragraphs in a passage and annotate what we think each passage is about to form an overall summary of what was read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Building background knowledge to why the skill/concept is important is key. Being able to link what they accomplished in previous years and how beneficial those skills/concepts will be in upcoming years is key! Modeling strategy expectations and practicing together will help build student confidence when they perform independently.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Finding reading passages or math word problems that are relative to the student's interest peaks their excitement level. Also, putting items in a game-like format reels them in as well.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At the conclusion of each session, I will provide the student with an exit ticket. It will consist of 3-5 questions related to the skill/concept we worked on that day. The following day we would analyze any questions they struggled with, and I would provide remediation/reteaching of the skill prior to moving on with new information. After 3 sessions on the same skill/concept, students will take an assessment.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive words of praise and affirmation are what every child needs to hear. We don't focus on "where you should be by now" levels or numerical values that place them in achievement categories.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I will not allow a student to continuously make errors. If I see that they need to revisit a skill/concept prior to their grade level to assist them, I will. We would use a variety of manipulatives, media and technology to assist in any way possible.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

There will be times when the instruction is maybe too challenging for the student that particular day. Instead of continuing and risk the student getting agitated, we would revisit items they are able to accomplish with ease to build their esteem, and then they will be able to take on those challenges with a little more ease.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Grade level passages/questions, spiral notebook for note taking and problem solving, highlighters, markers, copy paper, graph paper, flashcards, iPad or computer, pencils, connecting cubes, mini and formal assessments.
