Dorian

I am a senior at Tufts University graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science. I'm super passionate about the creativity and nuance involved in Comp Sci, but I also enjoy tutoring for music theory, SAT prep, and many AP exams. Though I've taught large classes in the past, I find individual tutoring to be much more engaging and rewarding! I know that, as a student, I learn best when my teacher makes an effort to engage with me personally and present material in a way that relates to my interests and passions. So that's my number one goal as a tutor -- to create a unique and personal dialogue with students, and to empower them to achieve their goals. I'm also a firm believer in balancing education with extracurriculars, and I love being involved in theater, film, and live music. In my spare time, I enjoy playing pickup basketball and video games with my friends.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I focus on creating a comfortable learning environment for students and maintaining an open dialogue. Students learn best when they feel empowered and are engaged with the material, so my goal as a teacher is simply to encourage them and present challenging topics in new ways until something sticks!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a first session, I typically want to focus on getting to know the student by asking questions and listening. It's important for me to understand what the student finds challenging with the material, but I also want to know what he/she is interested in so I can cater my teaching style to the student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Confidence is vital for independent learners, while self-doubt can really ruin one's focus and drive. Knowing this, I tutor with the goal of empowering students to teach themselves! If a student no longer needs my regular assistance and is able to teach him/herself, I've done my job.
