I am currently an electrical engineering student at Wright State University. Currently, I am working on my Bachelor's degree. I have tutored many subjects since high school, ranging from basic arithmetic to elementary students to college level physics. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because I find the straight-forwardness of math to be elegant and precise. Tutoring fellow students is a passion of mine, as I believe that educating people is equivalent to bettering their status in life. When I have time to relax, I like to read, play video games, and watch action/adventure movies.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to do anything I can to help students help themselves. Tutors can only nurture whatever seeds of motivation are already in the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, I would introduce myself and do my best to become familiar with the student while assessing their abilities.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

In order to help a student to become an independent learner, you have to instill the love of learning into them. You can do this by showing them the utility of learning and the joy of learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

If a student is unmotivated to learn, I would use rewards to motivate them. If rewards fail, I will talk to the student to find the source of the problem.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to translate the skill or concept into a different form that the student would understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would use repetition and encouragement to help students.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience and understanding are the key to helping students learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I can help students get excited/engaged by relating the subject to their life, or by using a reward system.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use questions that test the comprehension of the student about the subject, instead of just drills.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Encouragement and patience go a long way in building a student's confidence on a subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Personally watching a student work and analyzing the questions they ask will help me evaluate a student's needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by focusing on what the student is struggling on, and taking note of/praising what the student excels at.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I will use a textbook, pencil, eraser, paper, calculator, a notebook to record how the student is doing, and possibly the internet during a tutoring session.
