What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I want to get know the student by asking them about their family, hobbies, interests, and other miscellaneous activities!
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by gearing the tutoring session towards each individual student. I will want to know what is going on in his or her life that I can try to relate the problem(s) to.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to backtrack to find a place where the student is successful, even if it is going back a grade level or a couple. Then after they achieve mastery on those problems, move slowly to the skill or concept that they are struggling with.
What is your teaching philosophy?
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." -Nelson Mandela
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
How I build a student's confidence is trying to find a place where they can achieve. For example, finding a place where they excel in the subject, even if it is backtracking to find that place in that subject matter by content or skill.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Usually when I tutor, the material I like to use is a writing material, usually pencil, and paper. I prefer this because I am a visual person. I need to write down how to solve before I can explain it.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by guiding them towards their mastery of that content or skill after receiving help through previous material.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
The first thing I always do before I start a session is ask about the student’s day, about their interest/hobbies, or even ask how their family is doing. Interacting this way helps the stress level of a subject matter that they are struggling with.
