What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe teaching is a collaborative, holistic process. A great teacher does not simply offer students the right answer, but rather guides students towards greater confidence in their own learning abilities and helps them discover the answer independently.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In our first session, I will ask the student about his or her personal goals for the tutoring session, and ensure our focus areas align with those the student wants to work on.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I always like to leave my students with additional learning resources, such as handouts or websites that help them continue their learning on their own. In tutoring sessions, I focus on a student-led approach that empowers the student to grow confidence in their learning abilities and models effective study tools.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Make sure to point out where the student is improving, and show how their score or writing ability has improved over time. I also think a positive attitude and positive tutor-student relationship goes a long way!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Break down the concept into its most simple parts, using models and examples.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Encourage to underlining and margin notes as they read the passage, and speed reading techniques such as focusing on word connotation and the first and last sentences of paragraphs. Also remind them that practice makes perfect!
