What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would try to identify the student's strengths and weaknesses in terms of learning and studying. I understand that everybody learns and studies differently, so if I am able to hone in on how this particular student works best, I will facilitate a more productive tutoring session.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I think that learning how to study effectively ultimately helps students learn and absorb the material. For instance, if I learn that the student is a visual learner, I could point them towards the direction of using visual study tools such as pictures and charts. Once the student understands what study methods are best suited for him/her, he/she can progress to independent study.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I think compassion and encouragement have always kept me motivated as a student. For instance, whenever a professor took the time to explain something to me, or when my parents express that they are proud of me, it helps me to stay motivated. I would try to encourage my students as much as possible and ensure them that even though they may not see the results they are looking for, they are doing great and their progress is good!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to break down the concept into simpler language that makes sense and is relatable to the student. For instance, I could compare the concept to a real-world experience.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would suggest writing a brief outline as the student read. I find that jotting down the main point of the paragraph and the main point of the overall piece always helps me to understand better.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would try to relate the subject to something that they are interested in.
