What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy includes trying to find a way to make learning fun and applicable to each individual student. I believe that if a student can relate to the material and find real life applications, it will be easier for them to learn.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I would have a talk with the student and discuss any goals and long-term plans. I would have the student right them down so we could go over them later and be able to track achievement. I would then have them make a calendar with any tests or assignments and make a schedule. Finally, I would have them walk me through what they had learned and go over any notes and in-class assignments.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By teaching them the study tools and skills they need to succeed and can apply to any subject.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Patience, understanding, and reminding them of their end goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try and teach them different ways to approach the problem until one clicks.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Going through each sentence and helping them understand it and describe it in their own words.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Setting long and short-term goals, working on organization, and making a calendar.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By relating it to their real lives or demonstrating how it will be useful in the future.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Practice problems, quizzes, and talking through the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Practice as much as possible.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Discussing them and going over practice assessments.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By reading their signals and asking them which methods work best.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Notes, flash cards, practice quizzes.
