Amina

I am an aspiring elementary school teacher who is pursuing an education in childhood development at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, which will set the foundation for my multiple subject teaching credential. I have already completed 39 units of study and have so far maintained a 3.92 GPA. I’ve tutored ESL and math at various levels and I believe my approach to tutoring is very beneficial to the students. My lessons help students explore information for themselves and then build on existing knowledge that they already have. I’m patient with my students and am willing to explore different ways to approach the subject if my students have trouble understanding. I like to take time to figure out the weaknesses of my students and help them get better at them. I know what it takes to excel academically and I have good interpersonal skills. I enjoy teaching Math because I have a passion for the subject. And I believe that learning math and English should be fun and easy.
When I’m not busy studying, I enjoy watercolor painting, baking and reading YA fiction. Some of my all-time favorite books are Red Queen, and the Harry Potter and Divergent series.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in approaching problems through various real life examples so that my students can understand them better.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I use the first session to understand the student's learning style. I also use this as an opportunity to assess the student's level of understanding of the subject. And then I use this as a guide for the rest of the lessons.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

At the end of each lesson, I review with my students everything new that they learned and every mistake that we were able to correct. This helps them to identify their weaknesses and works on them to become independent learners.
