I am a sophomore at UCLA studying Economics and Latin. I have worked as a camp counselor for the past four summers and enjoy working with kids from all different ages. I have tutored High School Math and Latin both on a volunteer and paid basis. Often confusion in Math and Latin can be rectified by explaining the misleading concepts in a new way. When working with students, I like to make the tutoring sessions a conversation rather than a lesson. Kids spend so much time at school being lectured at, and doing class work that they rarely get to discuss the material. As much as I enjoy tutoring Math, my true passion is Latin because of its harmonious and beautiful structure. I love learning about new perspectives and ideas, and I impart this on my students. In my free time I enjoy playing basketball and volleyball, and watching Ted Talks.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I love discussing the material with students so I can see where they are confused. A discussion of the material is much more enjoyable for the student than a lecture.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

A good way to understand what you are reading is to pause after each paragraph and think about what you just read. The students can then put what they read into context, and understand the reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I like to ask the students questions about themselves and in turn tell them some things about myself. This way we get to know each other and establish a mutual respect. This methodology leads to productive and enjoyable tutoring sessions.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A great way to evaluate the level of understanding a student has is by making up multiple example problems that test different facets of the material. This way, I can see what particular part of the material the student is struggling with.
