What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
My philosophy of education is that every student has the right to learn and grow, and has an equal opportunity to have a quality education. My students feel safe and welcomed, and are not scared to take chances and make mistakes. It is an enriching and motivating environment. I hope to be a positive influence in my students' lives, and encourage my students to love learning and become successful well-rounded citizens. I need to have the highest expectations for my students. When I have high expectations, they believe in themselves, feel motivated, capable, and develop a can-do attitude. There are so many characteristics that make a great teacher, and I believe I embody those characteristics. I have a deep passion for teaching, and for my students. I am patient, loving, and hard working. I am aware of all my students, and their uniqueness when it comes to emotional, social, physical development, as well as their cognitive growth. I must become aware of these differences, and then be creative and assertive to reach student where they are in order for each student to be successful. I provide differentiated lessons that accommodate multiple intelligence, and keep students focused and interested by using a variety of manipulatives, technology, and enjoyable activities. I get to know each and every one of my students, and give them the opportunities to grow every day. I also believe it is important to make learning fun and exciting. By giving the students rewards for right behavior, giving them the opportunity to make decisions and be involved in their education, and truly understanding who the students are and their interests, they will in turn enjoy learning.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
There are a couple of ways to help a student become an independent learner. It is common for a teacher to constantly want to help a student and walk them through every problem. This creates a dependent learner. In order for them to become independent, it is important to encourage the student to try to figure it out on their own using the tools I have taught them. Excessive help and support takes away the opportunity for the student to think on their own. They become used to having someone there to always help them. Of course it is necessary at times to intervene and help a student, but when I know they can do it on their own it is my responsibility to encourage them to give it their all. Prompting them with questions such as "What do you think the first step you need to take is?" can help them, and still cause them to think for themselves. It is also effective to give the students choices and the opportunities to make their own decisions. When they feel involved in their education, they are more likely to complete the task they want on their own. They realize they have a say; therefore, they become independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
It is very important to keep students motivated. By creating a fun, welcoming, threat-free environment, students want to be there, and they have a positive attitude about the session. I like to use fun, engaging activities and strategies. When students enjoy what they are doing, they are more likely to stay motivated, and learn without even realizing it. I also use a lot of positive reinforcements and praise. It is very effective to praise a student. When a student gets a problem correct, or tries their hardest it is necessary to praise them. Hearing that praise and encouragement, they want to continue trying or try something harder because they know they can do it. Keeping them encouraged is a huge motivator. Every student loves a reward, whether that be a prize, playing a game, a piece of candy or whatever the students like, and they will be motivated if they know they can earn a reward. Rewarding a student for positive actions, instead of giving a negative consequence for a negative behavior, can encourage a student to stay focused, motivated, and try their hardest. I found it is effective to let the students know what they will be doing in the session. By walking through what they will be learning and the different activities they will be doing, they know what to expect. They know the steps they will be taking and the end goal; they are not left in the dark. Generally, students do not want to study or do work, so it can be motivating to let them know what they will be doing until the session is over. Another way to keep students motivated is giving them choices, and the opportunity to make decisions about their learning. When students feel involved in their learning, and like they have a say, they are more motivated. They are more willing to stay on task and work hard if they are completing something they chose to do.
