What is your teaching philosophy?
Never bring a student down, but do what you can to bring them up to success.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
A brief "get to know you" session, and then ask them what classes and/or specific topics they need the most help with.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teaching a student valuable study skills that I have gained over my academic years.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Using their dreams and aspirations as incentives to help them push through the hard times.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Start off by taking them through the basic process of how to use that skill or concept, and then give basic examples.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I used to struggle with this myself, so I know this issue firsthand. I would recommend that the student take notes over what they're reading as a guide so they can remember the story better.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Preparing for a session by creating a step-by-step process for the concept that the student is struggling with.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
The incentive of graduating, and of course the crazy money they strive to make later on!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Multiple practice exercises, and comprehension questions.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Having them do practice problems or comprehension questions over and over again until they get some right!
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Just talking to them about it, listening to their (and their parents') concerns, and having them explain to me what the problem exactly is.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By having them explain to me what exactly it is they need, I can make adjustments in my lesson plans.
