I've been in your shoes as a student long enough, and understand your struggles intimately. While my immediate task is to help my students do well on that looming assignment, my main objective is to help each student be a better and smarter student. My ultimate goal is to cultivate in my students an attitude of a life-long learner and independent thinker. Of course, along the way, you will certainly be completing assignments or mastering subjects you don't have much interest in. I've done plenty of that as well. Having had various professional careers over the years, I've also learned a thing or two about finding your passion and pursuing something worthwhile.

Q & A

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

1. Get to know the student, their interests, immediate needs, long term goals, etc. 2. Work on the immediate needs or assignments. 3. Make tutoring plans for the near future.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Help the student realize that learning goes beyond what's taught in school settings. Often, the most important life lessons are learned outside academia. I hope to cultivate this type of learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By helping the student align their interests with the subject matter, or helping them focus on their long term goals despite the boring or difficult subject matter.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

1. Learn the root of the difficulty. 2. Try various other approaches to learning, and think outside the box.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

1. Find out the root of the reading comprehension problem. Is it lack of a strong vocabulary? A bad reading habit? Lack of concentration? 2. Once the problem is identified, then we can work on the solution. Sometimes, patience, encouragement and sustained effort are necessary.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

1. Get to know the student, and whatever they are comfortable sharing. 2. Help with immediate academic issues. 3. Develop a tutoring plan.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Align their interests with the subject matter. Creatively think of how the subject matter is linked with their interests in real-world ways.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

1. Have the student explain/teach the material back to me. 2. Quiz the student. 3. Ask the student.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Confidence must be cultivated from within, in the form of self-esteem and believing in oneself. Then we can get to the business of mastering a subject, step-by-step, to build confidence in that subject.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, laptop, online sources, pen, paper.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Remember that first driving lesson? As a tutor, I am the passenger-teacher and the student is the driver. I am here to guide and help the student learn how to drive well, but I do not do the driving myself.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

1. Important and urgent 2. Important but not urgent 3. Not important but urgent 4. Not important and not urgent Based on student feedback, we should identify and focus on the first two.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

1. I get to know the student and their needs. 2. I try an approach that I think may help. 3. Based on feedback and/or results, I will try different approaches until we start achieving good results.
